Sustainability
As a responsible haulage company operating across the UK, we take great pride in our sustainability measures and goals. We recognise both the challenges of managing fleet operating costs and the importance of reducing our carbon footprint.
With over seventy 44-tonne trucks, our attention is on the future and how we can minimise our environmental disruption. We do this whilst maintaining support for our clientele across the nation.
Carbon Reduction Initiatives
Our ongoing goal is to reduce emissions today while preparing for a net-zero future in partnership with our customers. Our key initiatives include:
- Volvo Connect Fleet Management: Using this advanced system, we optimise routes and monitor driver behaviour to maximise fuel efficiency.
- Driver Engagement: Through monthly performance scoring and a reward and recognition scheme, our drivers actively compete to achieve the best fuel‑efficiency results. This has significantly improved fuel performance across the company and successfully reduced CO₂ emissions.
- Electric Company Cars: All of our company cars are now fully electric, reflecting our ongoing commitment to sustainability and reducing our environmental impact.

Modern Fleet Investment
At SJ Messenger Haulage, we are always investing in modern vehicles for our fleet to ensure we are on track with our carbon goals. Our fleet is built around turbo compound Volvo tractor units. This is because the Volvo D13T460A TURBO‑TC engine is currently the most fuel‑efficient diesel engine available.
As engine technologies develop, we’ll continue to update and upgrade our fleet to ensure our operations are as efficient and environmentally responsible as possible.
Electric Vehicle Trials
To keep on top of developing technology, we are actively preparing for the transition to electric haulage.
In November 2023, we trialled the Volvo FM electric tractor unit paired with an electric Atlas artic crane trailer. This was a genuine operational test, not a box‑ticking exercise. With the right charging infrastructure and regulatory adjustments, we believe electric haulage can be implemented successfully in the UK market.
Also in November 2023, we attended the unveiling of the Mercedes‑Benz Actros 40‑tonne electric truck in Germany, which demonstrated groundbreaking performance by driving 1,000 km through the Alps with only one charging stop.
Our Commitment to the Future
At S J Messenger Haulage, we believe it is time to face our environmental responsibilities head on. We are ready to implement changes as soon as they are viable for the UK’s 44‑tonne 6×2 market. With financial backing, we are confident in delivering a 25.5‑tonne payload day‑cab drawbar crane for local deliveries.
We have already engaged with experts from Volvo and specialist body builders to move forward, backed by strong supplier partnerships. For more information on how we are sustainably committed to the future, get in touch with our team.
